Day 205, 1 Timothy 4
After the descriptions of true leaders in Chapter 3, we turn to Chapter 4 which specifically warns us to avoid deception rooted in turning away from God! If only this chapter had been applied to the historical distortions of Paul’s instructions in Chapter 3!
In the first part of the chapter, Paul is correcting the local heresy that is was more spiritual to be celibate or to abstain from certain foods. In other words, to parade self-righteousness for gain. Instead of embracing these “thou shalt not…” errors, Timothy is to quickly abstain from them!
This conduct is like athletic training - it’s hard work to resist all the man-made traditions and rules that seek to inhibit the liberty God wants for His children! Bodily gymnastics are valuable in some ways, but living aligned with God’s heart and priorities is far more valuable (and just as energetic). So read, pray and teach others - that’s the best exercise!
Paul tells Timothy to be diligent in living out the purpose God has spoken over him. May I exhort you to do the same? Don’t be what anyone else says you should be: be who God says you are! Living what you preach, and preaching by your life, brings sozo (salvation, healing and wholeness) to you and everyone who knows you (verse 16).
Have a great day!
Mark.
