Day 216, Hebrews 3
Our third chapter in Hebrews turns to affirming that Jesus is greater than Moses. So these early chapters show the Christ as above angels and superior to the lawgiver of the Jewish nation. It would be a mistake for the readers to revere Moses (rightly, for he faithfully brought Israel out of Egypt and established the nation through the Law) yet not revere Jesus more.
Moses was a servant; faithful and obedient, building the tabernacle as part of the structure of the Jewish nation. Jesus is the Son who builds the House of God, which is prefigured by, but greater than, the Tabernacle. We are part of this greater house.
The second half of the chapter warns against hardness of heart. This sin was the downfall of the nation Moses led, and it can be our undoing also. Deception is deceitful (to state the obvious), and if our focus is on the surface appearance, we can be deceived into doubting God. This hardens our hearts against Him and leads us astray into rebellion.
By contrast, Jesus (our example) never doubted God’s voice, always walking in obedience. If we walk in wholehearted obedience we will live at rest, trusting God with soft hearts.
Have a great day!
