Day 104, Acts 7
We already saw how Stephen shone with heavenly love while falsely accused. Now we see how well he comprehends the significance of what God has done. His explanation to the High Priest and the religious leaders is so clear that their religious demons cannot stand it, and they stone Stephen to death!
And Saul of Tarsus is the young rabbi who looks after their outer garments during this illegal execution.
Stephen, meanwhile, sees Jesus standing to welcome the first martyr (of many) from the young Church. Stephen’s prayer as he dies bears remarkable resemblance to the final words of Jesus from the cross. This man was just like Jesus - and he died just like Jesus - but now death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life with God. So no resurrection for Stephen, but a celebratory welcome into glory instead.
And so the Church in Acts grows stronger, and less like most churches today. If you are stirred by this contrast, as am I, let me recommend Ed Silvoso’s book Ekklesia for further reading.
Have a great day!
