Day 12, Luke 5

Luke 5

Once again, Luke gives us detail on an account we have already read. In this case, the calling of Simon and Andrew (and their friends James/Jacob and John).

Simon’s obedience to Jesus’ instruction was the key to a great miracle. He knew that it didn’t make logical sense (they had fished all night without success), but he was willing to do what this rabbi said. There’s something unique about Jesus’ words. They carry authority and invitation. When we hear His voice, it will often not make “logical” (meaning human) sense. But if we will follow Simon’s example and say “I will do as you say” then we will see the supernatural as they did. And the supernatural always brings conviction of sin (falling short of God’s best).

As you read the rest of the chapter, notice how Jesus is not rejecting the instructions that brought Israel to this point in history; they are God’s life-giving guidance for sinful humanity. But He is simultaneously threatening the religious power structures that have grown up around the truth, as obstacles to relationship with God. This conflict alienates the powerful, while delighting the oppressed.

Jesus comes to open God’s Kingdom wide to any who will accept His invitation. This is a truth that religion smothers in an attempt to retain power and control. Today’s chapter is another reminder to beware religious bondage.

By the way, if you have not yet seen the series The Chosen, I highly recommend it! It shines such light on the freedom Jesus brings, and infuses humor and life into the historical accounts that may have lost their luster through familiarity.

I especially love the scene with the miraculous catch of fish. The writers have crafted a back story that gives added significance to the attractiveness of Jesus’ call. We are all drawn to Him in different ways, but all are powerful!

And the way Matthew is portrayed in the series is both attractive and believable. His following is very different from Simon and Andrew’s, but it shows us there is a place for everyone in Jesus’ kingdom. God does not have favorites: every human is made in His image and precious to Him.

The DVD is available from Amazon, or you can watch with the Chosen app on your smartphone.

Have a great day!

Mark.
